After a spirited driving, there is that burning smell coming from underneath the rear wheels. No smoke. No oil leak. Not coming from the engine. Not so heavy when driven on the highway. Only when I shift and brake a lot. People are noticing the smell at stop signs. Never went in the red zone. 5-6 k rps. The previous owner is a guy I know. He took it to the dealer and they kinda told him: Live with it. Car is very well maintained.
What should I do ?

I want to lease a 2009 Porsche, either a base 911 or a Cayman. I want it nicely loaded with Xenons, premium sound, navigation and ipod interface and maybe automatic transmission (still undecided about that.) I want either a two or three year lease and I want 4K mi/yr as I don't drive much. I have good income and excellent credit. What should I expect my lease payment and up fromt charges to be on these two vehicles.

Thanks

The Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe is $76000, has 345 hp, and is a 911 which is worth something extra. The Cayman S costs $60000, but has 320hp and isn't as special as a 911. Which do you think is the one to get, or is a top of the line Nissan 370Z Touring a better buy?

I plan to upgrade/replace the ECU in my 911 Turbo S. There are apparently many choices (Upsolute, EVOtech, PowerChip, APR, etc.) that more or less seem to result in simular HP increases. Prices however seem to differ tremendiously (starting at $700 and going up to almost $4k). Which chip should I choose? I'm not planning to do any further modifications, and I would prioritize daily driving reliability over HP increase.

deciding between 2004 turbo Porsche Cayenne with 49000 miles and 2006 S with 25000.

The Turbo has the PLUSH leather, and of course it is a TURBO. The S has capability to add satellite radio which I want. It will an expensive add on but it will work seamlessly with the Nav screen. I would have to add an external unit on the 2004 I beleive as satellite was only offered in 05. I would only have volume control on Nav screen. (boy I sound picky) What do I do? 2004 or go newer with less miles. The turbo was a much more expensive car in 04 than S in 06...can't decide..

As already posted by another member, I have the problem of my horn sounding when I go over bumps and when I am decelerating. I noted the repair recommended, but until such time as I can get my Boxster into the shop, I want to disable the horn so as to not annoy other drivers while enroute to the shop which is quite some distance away. Knowing the actual fuse assignments can be quite helpful in many cases, not just this one. Failing this I will have to attempt to physically locate the horn and remove and tape off the leads.Thank you

My uncle who is was a big wig at Porsche hooked me up many years ago through an uncle that has died, and left no forwarding address. I had some people go to England to pick up the car and am the second owner, and it has never been modified except for 1975 bumpers to satisfy customs. It has been sitting for years with 39082 Km miles on the Odometer, and has lots of belly rust. I feel it is special because I beat a 2.7 FI RSR once, but I need to justify fixing it up to my wife.
1972 Stock Weber Porsche

Dear karjunkie
Thank you for answering my question, but I am afraid you are mistaken. Not only is it plain to see that the air cleaner and all the hardware built around the Webers is stock, but around 72 their was an article about 3 such Porches built. The Editor was allowed to drive one and commented how he was scared when he reached 183mph, the owner replied he had reached 187mph, but both commented that they still had more than 1000rpm until redline. One was outfitted with FI but also had the carbs and hardware shipped with it. I some day will go to the main library in Sac CA and find this article but I forgot if it was Road and Track or Car and Driver. This Car actually was my uncles' factory loaned driver which they would not let him keep. My uncle was an engineer at Porsche responsible for such things as Schmidt's Tolerancing and did not steer me wrong. I was only able to buy this car because the owner died. The car sat for two years in Estate and I was able to talk his Daughter in Santa Barbara Ca into purchasing the car. I am essentially the second owner on paper. It cost me more than $20,000 US to have the head account representative from Merril Lynch and his friend bring the car over to the States(I also had to buy 1975 bumpers and ship them over, to get it into the states). Porsche however did not then or now acknowledge that these few cars exist because their light weight(less than 2000lbs) and performance can not be matched by a 2.7 RSR(it would have been bad PR). Back when I got this car, I knew the other two were in Detroit belonging to one man who drove the one, let the Editor drive it, and garaged the other. I am someday hoping to find someone who is knowledgeable of them or the venturi effect that kicks in at high rpm.

Does anyone know how to remove the decals on the sunvisors on my Boxster? They are bright colors, seemed glued on like a decal and are extremely ugly. Tried to soak them but nothing works. They sure are ugly and create a glare in the sunlight.

What is the best way to keep the front radiators clean on a '03 Porsche 911 C2?

I have a '03 911 C2 and I have noticed dirt accumulating in and round the three front radiators. I see grasses, bugs and dirt among other stuff. I'm assuming that if I keep them clean, the car will run more efficiently and the AC and engine will run cooler. What is the best way to keep them clean? I have heard of high pressure water hose and of course the garden hose, and even an air hose. What would you suggest other than taking the entire front of the car off to clean them?

Blown Porsche Boxster engine and new choices.

Mr. Fixright - I am asking you this directly as I see you are quite knowledgeable in this area.

My Boxter engine siezed on St. Patty's day after a very non-rigorous drive. White-grey smoke biloowed out of the exhaust as I pulled into my driveway. Anyway - my personal mechanic confirmed it would not hand crank as did the dealer that I bought it from. I took it to the dealer and they are working on getting me a replacement car as I only drove it 9K miles from the time I bought it (bought at 41K and it was at 49K when it blew)

Here are my options:

1. I owe $8K on my Boxster - a new engine install would be around $10 - $14K with the dealer quoting me $12.5K at cost for them to do it. Quite frankly I love the styling on my old box, but do not want to deal with the hassle of getting a new engine for it. Dealer stated they would pay the balance on my current Boxster loan. The owner is going to put a race engine in it and track it. So doing this will get me $8.5K I can apply to a new/used car at their place. I think this is a fairly good deal as legally they don't have to do anything!

2. Option 1 - 1999 911 coupe - 44K miles. Asking $29K for it. I plan on negotiating it to $24K? 1 Owner - bought and serviced there and the owner sometimes tracked the car with the local Porsche club out fo that dealer. Trade in for 2002 turbo. Minor swirls in the paint but they are detailing it out for me next week to take a look at it.

3. Option 2 = 2005 Boxster at 55K miles for $27K - negotiate to $24K also probably. The car is cherry and was an everday driver for a guy that had a long commute for work.

4. 2002 911 Turbo Coupe with tiptronic 44K miles at asking price of $50K The $50K is well below what I have seen these cars go for and I may be able to get it a little lower actually. This car has all the options available to the model it seems and is in excellent condition from what I saw - I have not driven it yet as it came in the day I was there on a trade for 2009.

So the question I have are this:

1. Keep it simple - if you had $8.5K to apply to one of the options above. what would you do. Keeping in mind the turbo is currently my last choice as I just drive this as a second car and don't need all that power. What your opinion from a reliability standpoint and value holder?

2. Track cars versus second cars. I have had discussions with other folks and they tell me that occasionally tracking a 911 if a good thing. I am skeptical about that - it seems logocal to me that tracking a care would "age" car components and push them to the max?

So here I am - blown engine and $8.5 K left on my car - dealer willing to work with me to get my old car off my hands when he really does not have to (they are very reputable) and I have the three choices above.

I love the styling on the '99 911 but the Boxster is a 2005 but has more miles.

Any input would be appreciated.

I've just purchased a Porsche Boxster and, especially because I do not have a garage, am looking for the best car cover/protection for this specific car. As I will be driving the car almost daily, convenience is also a factor. Any suggestions?
