Is it better to rebuild a damaged manual transmission or install a rebuilt one?

A follow-up to an earlier question. I have a 2000 Subaru outback. The dealer recommends rebuilding a damaged manual transmission for a cost of $3700 parts and labor. I asked about replacing the whole tranny with a factory rebuilt one. He quoted me a price of $2500 for the tranny and $1200 to install it. So, both options are the same price. Is one option better in terms of the long-term use of the car?

To note, a local transmission shop offered to rebuild the transmission for $2,000-2,500. Both places say they have mechanics with lots of experience rebuilding transmissions.

Any advice on which path to follow?

Thanks.

Lexus 2002 IS 300, has 48,000 miles. started recently driving it again after a year or so. the clutch seems to be going out and i was wondering which is better for the car. going with stock parts or aftermarket. trying to find quotes on how much clutch kit would be. either buying a new flywheel or trying to resurface the older one. what would you suggest. the mileage does seem kinda low for the clutch to being going out.

I cannot figure this out, I push the clutch in and put the car in 1st , and if I let it sit for a few seconds in gear with the clutch pressed in it will start to disengage without me letting the clutch out (this happens sometimes in 2nd and happens a lot in reverse as well).

I just put a new clutch kit in the car and it made no difference, it did this before I replaced the clutch and it does it the exact same now after. I bled the clutch as well and it made no difference (the fluid is pretty dirty but I don't think that would cause this problem).

Anyone have ANY idea what this is? Please help! Thanks!
I have an '03 Mini, standard shift, that I bought new. Have had no problems with clutch or transmission, 44,000 mile on it. Is all this stuff I'm reading inevitable, is there a class action suit I should know about? I love this car and do not want to get rid of it. What are the symptoms of transmission failure...i.e. warnings before it happens? Are they all defective?

The 4Runner was recently wrecked by the previous owner when he decided to get drunk and go 4-wheeln. Here is what it is doing, when I let out on the clutch the speedodometer moves as if the truck were moving but it isn't, this happens in 4hi, 4lo, and 2hi. The previous owner told me he thought the chain had been knocked loose in the transfer case but I think it could just be some vacuum lines that came loose.

2002 Subaru Forester with 87000 miles and transmission problems. HELP!

The car is making a noise, louder in 5th gear and when I step on the gas, kind of higher pitched and like a blender. It has always (since I got it) kind of bucked in 1st gear when I drive it after a period of rest. I recently had synthetic transmission fluid put in to help extend the life of the tranny. I was told the transmission is too costly to fix, and I should get a used one put in. I guess what I want to know is: 1) Should I get a used tranny? 2) Should I find someone to investigate and FIX my existing tranny? 3) Why would a car with so few miles have this problem in the first place, and 4) Once I DO get it fixed, should I sell/trade it because there is a bigger problem that caused this problem? Any advice would be much appreciated!

The noise sounds like its coming from the rear end. Happened to me at the 15k service and the 30k service. The changed the fluid and rotated the tires for both of these. No noise when going in a straight line, when making turns from a stop with a little power makes some bad noises. Seems to go away as the car heats up.

It's a 1986 Mustang GT with a T5 transmision. It's all stock amd I have been replacing clutch cables because they keep breaking and I cant figure out why.

I have gone through too manny cables. Well it's not the cable but its the caseing. It's breaking just below the mounting breaket. The caseing is broken and the line loses shape and wont pull the clutch compleatly out. So what would cause this and how can I stop it?

I dont get 30 miles out of it. it is mounted in the stock place and routed the same as the stock one and ive never replaced one on the car befor and now im going through about 2 a day. whats wrong?

After about a week noticed fluid on bell housing & ground. It appears to be brake/clutch fluid and reservoir is low. Is there a trick to fix, tighten or does transmission have to be removed and release cylinder replaced?

The truck is a one owner in great shape. Bought the truck knowing the clutch or something was bad thinking it would be an easy fix. WRONG! Installed new clutch, plate, release bearing, and cable only to be back at step one. The release bearing has to be adjusted contacting the fingers on the plate to have pedal a little off the floor. I have been asking all over if this is indeed the clutch for this truck. I called the only owner of the truck and he replied that when he had the original clutch replaced, it was never the same or operated right. The cable has to be shimmed at the firewall with a 1 1\2 shim also to achieve anything. This is a 92 truck, 2.3 liter, 5 speed, M75 trans. Had one guy mention whether I installed a long or short release bearing, but can't find a listing at the parts stores that these exist. PLEASE SOMEONE HAVE A CLUE TO THIS ????

Thanks for the reply on the 92 Isuzu Pickup manual transmission.

Yes, one would assume the cable is too long but it is new and is the only size available. I have the Haynes rebuild manual and all my parts look as those in the book. The problem has to be at the throwout bearing or preasure plate. The bearing is to be adjusted 3\8" away from the plate fingers. By doing so, you can not get it in gear and the pedal will not come back up. The only way to get this to work is to adjust the throwout bearing until it is tight against the plate. I'm no machanic and that's why I'm here for answers. It is as though this clutch kit is not for this truck but is the only one listed at parts stores. Even if the cable were shorter, which I have achieved with the shims, does not justify why the throwout bearing has to be against the plate to work. Have driven it this way for about 100 miles and starting to get a sqealing noise throughout the shift cycle.

The 2.6 does use a different clutch, and all of my parts were just as you described. In my manual there are pictured 2 different clutch forks. Each pivot on opposite sides. No parts house can show me a better pic of either one. Can the pivot side make a difference? What can be worn on the fork? Should I just order a new fork not knowing if it is going to be just like the one I have? How long can the current setup last as it is?

I've recently become a Nissan 300 Z owner. When taking off, everytime I shft, there is a solid "thump" underneath?

I've looked but cannot see where anythings hitting. It sounds like the differential twisting up and banging the floor pan. It happens when letting the clutch out. If I let the clutch out easy, it taps lightly. If shifting hard and fast...it really smacks. whatever it is.

Isuzu Pickup clutch fixed finally.

Wanted to let you know the answer to this problem. The shift block which carries the release bearing had maybe a 1/16" of wear and the fork pivot ball as well. Put a 1/8" washer behind the pivot ball and had the block built back up and ground down. These tiny wear areas were causing the need for the 1 1/2" shim at the firewall to make the cable seem shorter and get the bearing to the plate. I can not believe how a little build up on these areas took up the 1 1/2" at the pedal. Might want to remember this one.

My clutch on my 2000 Toyota Tacoma sticks at the floor, what do I do?

When I press down on the clutch, it stays in the down position. I have to use my toe to get under it & pull it back up. Once it is pulled back into place, it stays, but everytime I press it down, it goes to the floor & stays. There is still some resistance in it, but it does not come back up. Someone suggested to check the clutch resevoir fluid, but i cannot find it. I look at the engine & in the back right corner, I see the two brake fluid resevoirs, but there are no other resevoirs.

Toyota Tacoma clutch question

Thank you for your quick reply!
I have seen a couple people suggest it may be the clutch hydraulic & suggested to replace both clutch master & slave cylinder at the same time. This sounds expensive. =(
Is this something that can be done at home or does a dealership have to do it on a 2000 Toyota Tacoma?
