Cannot get a starter to last more than 6 months in my 1994 Chevy S-10.

I have a 1994 Chevy S10 4 cylinder 5 speed. standard transmission. I have put 5 starters in this vehicle in 4 years. All of these starters have been installed by professional mechanics. All of these starters have had issues with alignment (broken worm gear housing, burned out bushings). I'm told there are no starter shims recommended for this vehicle, which would seem to be the issue. Has anybody ran into this issue.
Johnbc
I have a 99 S-10 2.2L. I was traveling at highway speeds on I-75 during the rain when it felt like the ABS kicked in twice in a row and I hadn't attempted to brake, it was out of the blue. My instrument cluster went haywire for a minute and then settled down to just an ABS light. Fortunetly I didn't lose control of the S-10 I just slowed down a bit. Any ideas as to the cause?

Soft brake pedal on '98 Chevy S10. Fronts bleed fine. Good bleed at dynamic load balance, but air at rear wheels. Suggestions?

I'm trying to track down the source of air bubbles while bleeding the rear brakes on a '98 S10. I get good bleed on the fronts as well as the zerk fitting at the dynamic load balance switch. That switch has two input(?) lines and one output line that get's split to each rear wheel. I've tried with and without pulling on the load level bar, but I get very little release of the pedal and mostly air from the zerk fittings at the wheels. The manual says "don't touch" the dynamic load switch, but I'm pretty sure that's my problem. Thanks.

I'm doing a brake system overhaul. I'm trying to bleed the rear brakes by attaching a hose to the fitting and going into a jar of brake fluid. I am unable to do this because the fitting is recessed and there is no way to put a wrench on the fitting. Any ideas on how I can do this, or should I just I try another method?

I have a 1996 Chevy S10 (4x4). I had to buy a pittman arm and an idler arm and their associated connectors and bushings. I cannot find a reference to either in my Haynes repair manual, do they come with other names? If so, is it an easy repair? I'm pretty familiar with my truck, but have never had to do any work on any steering system. Any advice would sure be helpful. Thanks a lot.

Zak

Hey there,

I saw that you answered someone's question about converting drums to discs on an older S10. I have a 1996 Chevy S10 4x4, and have had several problems with either the rear drums not automatically adjusting themselves (I think they're supposed to), or with my front pads just wearing out too fast because of all the load on them. Would it be practical to swap my rear drums for discs? I saw that because it is a light truck, I would have to use what you call a preportional valve. Is this a hard swap to make? I am something of a weekend-mechanic, but I don't really do any of my own machining. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Zak

I have purchased shocks for front and back for my S-10. I do have instructions from the Alldata DIY site, and Haynes manual. Looks like it will be straight forward, but I'm sort of new to learning to maintain vehicles. Just wondered if there are any special situations I should be aware of before starting the job. Rear looks very straight forward. The front appears that the top nut is just inside the access panel in the wheel well. Instructions say to remove through lower control arm. With my Jack at Maximum extension, and Jackstands at max height, it looks like I don't have a lot of clearance to get it through the bottom. Is that going to be an Issue? Any suggestions will be appreciated.I have applied PB blaster to the nuts to prepare, and they don't appear to have a lot of rust anyway.

Hello Tony, You answered my question I posted and wanted to know some specifics. Well no the brakes have not been worked on lately. I happened all of a sudden. And the only reason we changed the booster is because we asked a employee at O'Reilly's Auto Parts and that is what they suggested was wrong. I would be very thankful if you could give me your opinion of a solution.
Thanks, Tammy

'98 Chevy S-10 fine yesterday, today front and rear brake lines are leaking badly, can only stop using emergency brake. Any help?

Have 4-cylinder 1998 Chevy S-10 (I think it has ABS). The brakes felt fine yesterday. Today drove it 0.1 mile from open/unattended overflow lot to my home, brake felt a little funny when I parked. Checked and added brake fluid. Drove maybe a quarter mile to stop sign and pedal went to floor without even slowing truck; had to push emergency brake to keep from entering highway. Thought it was supposed to have dual system to where both front and rear wouldn't go out at same time. Would master cylinder malfunction cause both lines to blow at same time? Or could someone have tampered...I haven't been able to get totally under truck to locate exact place of leaks due to darkness...and don't want to call sheriff's dept. unless I know for sure. (There is a man being evicted in this mobile home park that lost court case yesterday and he is blaming his eviction on most of the rest of the residents).

There is no grinding sound, just squeaking while driving. Do you think this might be a wheel bearing or U-joint?
Thanks
