Are such aftermarket transmissions reliable? Is it possible/feasible to replace an automatic tranmission with an aftermarket manual?

I have a 2001 toyota tacoma prerunner and love it. I want to add four wheel drive to it but have no knowledge about how to do it. I know it would be easier to just sell and buy a 4x4 but I would rather not. I also know that it is expensive to do something like this. I wouldn't do it myself i would have to find a shop to do it for me. Any price estimations or suggestions would be greatly appretiated.

What kind of improvements in 4th/5th gear acceleration should I expect with a short ram in my Protege

I am seriously considering installing a K&N complete cold air intake (CCA), configured as a short ram, in my '02 Protege. It's a great car, but 4th and 5th gear acceleration can be slow, especially when the air-con is on. According to K&N, I should expect a 5 hp improvement at around 3500 rpm. (In 5th gear, my car does 70 mph at 3300rpm and 80 mph at 3800 rpm.) My issues are:

1. How much of an improvement in 4th and 5th gear acceleration will I see with a 5 hp increase? Will it be noticeable?
2. Compared to my stock intake, what are the chances of my car being damaged by water with the short ram? (This is the reason I'm not considering the cold-air intake configuration at all.)
3. What are the issues/possible problems with short rams? Is it worth installing a short ram? Can they affect the longevity of my engine?
4. I know where to buy a short ram, but not where to get it installed. Do dealers install short rams? If not, where else can I have them installed? How much does it typically cost for installation? (I don't want to risk installing it myself.......)

Answers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

What are you hearing about the latest mileage boosting gimmick--the Hydro 4000?

This device claims to more efficiently burn residual fuel left in the cylinder. It promises it can double your fuel efficiency. A Palm Beach TV station tested it on a gas guzzling news truck and saw dynamometer readings go from 9 mpg to 22 + mpg after using it a month. It sounds like a new member in the gimmick of the month club.
