My 1993 Ford E-150 van idles so fast that in traffic you smell it burning. What besides vacuum leak would cause it.

1993 Ford e150 v5.8 motor. Transmission runs great. Runs great on highway just can smell the transmission fluid getting hot when idling in city traffic. Drove across country no problem until in Phoenix traffic. Drove back to east coast home no problems. Just idles so fast you could drive 5 miles an hour without ever touching gas pedal. Checked for vacuum leak could not find any. Got only 10 or 11 miles per gallon on trip. Would like to fix idle and possible improve gas mileage in case I want to make future trip in van. Completly checked all fluids and replaced all filters etc. Checked all hoses replaced several before trip. No problem just the idle am stumped as to what it is. If anybody has any suggestions I would appreciate it greatly. Also suggestions to improve gas mileage.
hoofy

How to repair steering column on a 91 Ford E-150?

The shift lever on the tilt wheel will not move out of park. The key will turn without any resistance but will not spring back to run automatically. I can not get the engine to crank. The key will unlock the steering wheel so it can be turned.
I have adjusted the starter switch (at end of connector rod on lower column) but it does not help. I have disconnected the linkage to the transmission but the shift lever still will not move.
I have been told that a small gear or other parts are broken inside the column. How do I get into the column to find what is broken? How easy is it to repair? Should I just get a used steering column instead of trying to repair?
Thanks for the help!

We have changed the EGR, most of the sensors, cleaned gas lines, did a full tune-up, checked ground lines in wiring harness. Motor was rebuilt 3 yrs. ago. Runs like a champ except on occasion it gets a strange serge or shuts off when I hit the brakes to turn a corner.

Gas fills VERY slowly on my Ford E-150 cargo van.

Just bought a 2005 Ford E150 cargo van. The first time I gassed up, the pump clicked off half-full. Second time, it filled VERY slowly -- could only pull the pump trigger 1/2 inch before it would cut off, repeatedly.

I looked underneath and saw the filler tube connects to a foot-long hose that elbows into the tank. It seems kinked where it turns. Looks like it's mounted about 1/2 " lower than it could be on the filler tube, and that it would be simple to loosen the hose clamp, raise the hose, and straighten that kink a little.

However, since it IS gas, I'm concerned about safety, or getting gas in my face. I know the fuel system is pressurized --will I need to de-pressurize the system first?

Any other precautions to take? Would it help if the tank was near empty?

Wow. After writing this, I checked the Technical Service Bulletinss and found :
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
Bulletin Number: 062318
Bulletin Date: Jan 2001
Vehicle: 2,005 Ford Econoline Cargo
Summary:
SLOW FUEL FILL ON VEHICLES WITH A 4.6L OR 5.4L ENGINE AND MID-SHIP FUEL TANK. ( NHTSA ITEM NUMBER - 10020671 )

That's it! 4.6L, midship fuel tank. Does it require a subscription somewhere to find out the details of this TSB? Would I be as well off paying a mechanic with access to TSBs to repair it ? Or does my proposed fix above sound like it's worth a try first?

Your advice appreciated.

I have been having this reoccurring problem with my van. When I start out cold and drive on the interstate for a distance then get off and come to a stop sign, the van quits. When I start it back up it backfires and sputters and dies.

I have had the throttle position sensor replaced and throttle body cleaned. I have replaced the mass air flow sensor. Both of these repairs were done at reputable repair shops. However, the problem still occurs on occasion. Some has suggested that the catalytic converter may be clogged. One of the repair shops tested the exhaust when they worked on it and said it tested ok. I am at a loss here as are the repair shop people. Any clues. Please help.
