Replaced Explorer's brakes but now they are grinding. Why?

I replaced the front brakes on my nephew's 2000 Ford Explorer XLT including rotors. Now the brake pedal feels like it's grinding or vibrating. I took it all apart and checked to see if there was something loose but nothing found. Did I miss something or is there a trick to correcting this problem?

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer. The first transmission was replaced at 74K miles. Ford replaced the transmission (under extended warranty) 11 months ago. I just put in my 3rd transmission around Christmas. Ford is saying that they only warranty the work on the 2nd transmission for 12 months 12K miles but wouldn't honor the 2nd transmission warranty because I put on 30K miles. I've since heard that Ford was to provide a 3-36 warranty on the 2nd transission. Does anyone have any information on Ford's warranty back in o6/early 07?

Over time, this steering wheel has disentigrated and no form of cover or glue-on laminate stays on so I want to replace the wheel. It is an airbag wheel. I have done a lot of maintenance before, but is there anything which will preclude my doing this work myself? Cheers. Todd

1996 Ford Explorer ABS

I have recently replaced all of the brake components at the wheel level, including pads, rotors, and calipers. The reason for this change was a vibration experienced during braking that i figured was either bad pads or warped rotors. The vibration not only did not clear up but actually got worse to some extent. Now what happens is that I get a very bad vibration on the first stop after the car has been turned off. Then when I get up to about 20/25 mph the abs light comes on, indicating the system has found a problem and shut down. After that the vehicle stops fine until the next time it is turned off. I read somewhere that the most likely culprit was the abs sensor in the rear end so I replaced that but made no difference. Any ideas will be accepted, thank you for your help. Mike

1996 Ford Explorer Ball Joints?

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L 6Cycl. 4WD VIN&quot;X&quot;. I was told when getting my driver side exhaust manifold gasket replaced that I need lower ball joints. I have no clue on how to take this project as my Hanes manual sucks and tells me that on 1995 and newer that you cannot just replace the ball joints you have to replace the control arm, but that is all it says. Is there any truth to this? Any website with a walkthrough and maybe some pictures would really help? Would it just be easier to replace both the upper and lower ball joints at the same time while I am in there, because I will be doing my brakes, rotors, and tires at the same time???

I am about to replace the passenger side exhaust manifold gasket, but I am unsure about a few things before I start. What size/thread/length are the manifold mounting bolts? What do you use to connect the Y-Pipe to the Manifold flange? Is there a gasket, bolt kit, etc? Also, is it an advantage to use lock bolts, and if so where can I find them?

I went from a full tank (topped off over full) of gas to under 3/4 in just 76 highway miles and it has a 22 gal. tank. The engine is reving up pretty high for 55 mph. The trans shop says the trans if ok and there is nothing wrong with it,but he also said if I take it somewhere else and they say it's bad to bring it back. They also said I have a 4 speed when I suggested it was'nt going in 5th gear. Now they are saying the lock up is the 5th gear.Is there any sensers outside the trans that can cause the high rpms? thanks for your help.

Brake rotors were caked wtih rust scalings. I am very easy on brakes and never had to replace a rotor on a vehicle in 35 years.<br>The mechanic said Fords are the worst for rotor rot since they use soft metal that rusts out even if u don't use it.<br><br>I called Ford Customer Relations but was told they had no recall on brake rotors for the 2002 Explorer.

1996 Ford Explorer brake problem

the response you sent to my problem last night is a place that I have already gone. I did search out a local mechanic with the ability to check the ABS codes and he did find and correct the ABS related problem that cropped up during the parts changing. the indicator plate or sensor plate on the back of the right front rotor was found bent and corrected. the right front sensor was replaced because it pulled slightly to the left during braking and the rear sensor was replaced because he didn't know where else to go. he never did get a code to show up. <br><br>so now we are back to the original problem in that the only symptom is the vibration (for want of a better word) during the last five feet of a normal stop. as far as braking effectivness the system is fine except that last five feet. if this was a mechanical system from the sixty's I would tell you that it was acting like it had air in the system but again only during the last five feet. the system has been bled no less than six times during this ordeal and I have good pedal up to the last five feet. <br><br>remember that when you are thinking about this one that whatever happened to this system happened during normal driving and none of the parts changing, code searching or bleeding of the system has had any effect on the original problem. since my last post I have changed the master cylinder and both front brake lines.<br><br>I'm at a loss and anyone at Edmunds that has responded hasn't helped.<br>please help and I thank you in advance for your time.
How can I tell if my Ford Explorer intake gaskets need to be replaced?

I have a cold start problem in the morning-1991 v6 Ford Explorer XLT starts ok, but when idling during warmup, hit the gas &amp; it sounds like it wants to die. This happens 2 or 3 times then fine for all other starts in the day. Biggest problem is loosing coolant. Had radiator/cap/hoses all checked &amp; they hold the 13lbs of pressure fine. Oil is clean &amp; I have no white exhaust, or cylinder boar damage so its NOT the headgasket or gasket.Taken to Ford dealership &amp; they can't tell me what is wrong!!I have to top off radiator every other morning &amp; radiator resivoir is ALWAYS empty so do that EVERY day. Mechanic told me this era Explorer is NOTORIOUS for having bad intake gaskets. Could this be my problem? Want to know before putting a lot of $ into this! About how much $ does this run? Are there any telltale signs that could confirm this?

1998 Ford Explorer power steering problems.

I just purchased a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport with 130,000 miles. I picked it up for short change, so an issue is to be expected. But when I turn the wheel all the way in either direction, or turn it at all at low speeds it vibrates. The dealer told me not to worry about it, he said it's common on Explorers, and nothing would happen if I simply ignored it. Do you think I should replace the power steering pump? The fluid is fine, and there is no leak. Or could I ignore it?

1997 Ford Explorer transmission question (2 wheel drive, 4.0L SOHC)

As part of our move from Japan back to the states (military) we bought an explorer off ebay and had it delivered. Upon taking receipt and while driving 200+ miles to my first stop I noticed that the truck was hard/delayed shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Once I made it to the stop I decided to get a tune up and have the transmission checked. The codes for the transmission indicated both sensors had gone bad. The shop attempted to change one and it didn't work so they recommended a transmission shop. Transmission shop called and said u have a 4R55E (4 speed) in a truck designed for a 5R55E (5 speed) and the rear wiring is not the same/cannot connect and they offered to put in the right transmission for 3+G's. I passed. I'm hoping some one may have come across this before. Based on what I've read the 5R55's extra gear is between 2nd/3rd where I'm experiencing the shift anomalies. I believe the delayed/hard shift is the computer thinking it has an extra gear? My current plan is to drive it until the transmission gives or I can find a reasonable replacement. Appreciate any input or thoughts.

i have a 2002 explorer that will make a popping noise when i turn sharp in<br>4wd i know that is most likely a cv joint going bad. but my question is at 20 to 30 mph i have a small vibration and when i get above that speed the vibration goes away but there is a nose like loud tire noise but it is not the tires.. a loud noise like a bad baring but when i steer the car to the left or drivers side the noise goes away when going straight or turn right the noise dose not change. im thinking drive side cv joint..help

What are the color codes for 92 Ford Explorer audio speaker wiring?

When replacing the factory stereo in my 1992 Ford Explorer, I was able to get the harness plug that controls the power features. However, I could not find a speaker wire harness that would connect to the factory speaker plug. I know the wire colors but do not know to which speakers and the positive and negative connections, and I don't want to tear my door panels apart to find out. Thanks!

I replaced the outer tie rod ends and while the tie rod was off the wheels both moved fully and smoothly with no binding in the ball joints.I heated the steering box with a hot air gun and the assist returned to normal. I noticed a small oil cooler on 1 of the lines.I didn't see any crushed or flattened lines. The problem has been much worse in this cold whether of late.I don't see any leaks in any lines or at the pump.
