Convert 2005 2WD Ford Explorer SportTrac XLS to 4WD?

How might I convert a 2005 2WD SportTrac XLS 4.0 to 4WD? How much would it cost if I do it myself? If I have the service center do all the work? Would it require any body/chassis modifications? How about the front end work (tie rods, knuckles, etc.)? New transmission, too? Can I keep the same engine? Would it make sense to upgrade the engine to the larger displacement? (not planning on doing any heavy hauling...)

Cost is an issue, but not the overriding issue. Three main goals: Cost-effective, shelter cargo from the elements, provide security for cargo. Insulation and an interior light would be nice, but not necessary. Would be nice if the seal with the cab were good enough I could keep the back window open and provide climate control for the cargo area.

Sport trac is feathering front tires. Any advice, details below.

My driver side front tire began feathering at 13,000 miles. Dealer has worked on alignment, adding camber cams and aligning it several different ways, even out of specs. Soon the passenger side started doing the same. After out of spec adjustment the driver side began wearing unevenly on the outside of the tire, (same as inside). It has been aligned approx every 3000 miles and they can't seem to fix it. The vehicle has 45000 miles on it now. Tie Rods have been replaced also. Two sets of tires ruined and need new ones now.

I hope someone has an idea what is going on. I am tired of being mad everytime I go somewhere because of the thumping created by the feathering of the tires.
Two months ago I started having this creaking sound when I started to brake at low speed. My pedal goes half way down, then the creaking sound, then it goes all the way down. At the same time I feel a slight pull forward, and my wheel is pulled to the right. This happens only once or twice a ride.

I have had my brakes checked twice in one week, and no one can find anything wrong. I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport with 36,000 miles. And I need your help. Has anyone had this problem, and if so please tell me what is wrong thanks.

Problem with drivers side lock on Ford Explorer Sports Trac.

Vehicle: 2001 Ford Explorer Sports Trac: Problem: Key won't unlock drivers side door, when you use the key, it seems to be stuck, it will turn some, just not enough to unlock door and if it truns all the way it is like your forcing it. The power door lock will not unlock door, other doors will unlock, but drivers side will move but won't unlock. Keyless entry acts the same as the power lock. Handle on door a lot looser the the handle on the passenger door. It will flap in the wind while driving down the highway. Can always open drivers door from inside handle when you want to exit vehicle or enter vehicle from passenger side. Took door panel off drivers side, but can't see anything obviously wrong.

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. Have the thermometer needle showing hot even after I replaced the gauge sensor & computer.

I have a 2001 ford sport trac and my thermostat needle raised to above the"H" hot mark first thing in the morning and the "Check Gage" light is lit. We replaced the sensor gage and the computer, and by the way there are two gages in the compartment, one is the gage the other the computer, they appear to be the same until you take them out. So we replaced both of these, disconnected the battery to reset the computer, but the light is still on and the thermometer did not drop from the "H" I think it even went higher if that's possible. My radiator is good, coolant remains in it and full, does not appear to be overheating at all and we checked the fuses. WE ARE STUMPED, Any ideas of what this could be, anyone experience this before?

I have factory security system with keyless/pads and identification in the keys. I was wondering if my secucrity system has malfunctioned and locked out my spark.

Could my coil pack go completely or generally is it just an odd spark. I have no spark.

All dash lights and guages work. I can hear the fuel pump when key is turned. Car cranks strong. Seems to have compression. O spark at coil pack.

Thanks in advance for any insight you may provide

Gary

Convert 2WD to 4WD - 2005 Ford Explorer SportTrac XLS

I'm moving to snow country! I have a 2005 2WD Ford 2005 Ford Explorer SportTrac XLS. What would it take (parts/time/money) to convert it to a 4WD? Would it require chassis/body modifications? How much would it cost if I were to do it myself? Have the dealer do it? Anything else to consider beyond the front end, transmission, and drive train? It's a 4.0L. Would I HAVE to upgrade the engine to higher displacement, or could I keep the 4.0L? I'm thinking of turbo/supercharging the 4.0 because of the high (8k') altitude at which I'll be living. Would that be sufficient (fuel economy is an issue), or would it be better to simply upgrade the engine (use more gas, but longer life, better towing capacity)? Lot's of questions!

Supercharge or Turbocharge a 2005 Ford Explorer Sporttrac XLS?

I have a 2005 2WD (possibly converting to a 4WD) Ford Explorer Sporttrac XLS with a 4.0 L in-line six. Since it's a high-torque, low RPM engine which usually stays between 1500 and 3000 RPM (can get as high as 3500 when flooring it going up a long, steep hill).

I'd like to know if it's feasible to add some boost to this engine. Will the engine handle a 20-30 percent boost? What would be the best route? Supercharge or Turbocharge? I'd like some quality, but good value (bang for the buck), too. Any recommendations? Resources? Links (URLs)?

My car is a 2000 Ford Explorer Sport. It has an alarm system. The driver side door handles, in & out do not work. I think it is the actuator because i've been having trouble for quite a while. Sometimes it would open & sometimes not. There was usually a hissing sound like some sort of vacuum leak. One day I was in it & went to get out and the door handle upon pull, stuck in open pull position and out just feels like it is not connected to anything. I pulled door panel off and felt around. There does seem to be some loose rods or something. You know u can't see a thing where u need to see especially when the door wont open. Any suggestions or help out there? I cannot afford to take to shop and since i used to be NIASE cert.in electrical as well as other areas i just refuse to give up so quickly. Appreciate anything in advance. Oldschool78

2004 Sport trac, 4x4, 4.0 flex fuel motor. 107 K miles on truck. It is burning or losing oil at a fast rate? There are no leaks on my garage floor, no leaks up top that I can find. I have been tiring to find the PCV valve and replace it but can not find this. I lose about 1 quart of oil for every 6 to 8 hundred miles! I do not see any smoke from tail pipe, there is no oil in my radiator, no leaks! This truck has been driven mostly on highways, but I do have a 4 inch lift kit, 34 inch mud tires, but this oil problem started before I did this, and have done some pretty good 4x4ing in this truck....so the motor has been tested at times. But come on...its 4 yrs old...it time for its first tune up....something is wrong with this picture.

Rev Limiter 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac.

I have a 2005 Sport Trac and today I was checking out to see if I could make the gas pedal a little lighter (waste of time, I guess). Well after I messed around with this I started the truck and revved it up a few times and it would start sputtering and spitting at 3000rpms everytime. I have 53,000 miles on the truck and I bought it new and it has never caused me any problems and even now it is running fine, but I am worring about the sputtering, because I do have to trailer my motorcycles every once in a while (never been a problem before) and I don't know if this is going to be a problem or if the computer just doesn't let you rev it too high in PARK...........any info please????

BD

02 Ford Explorer Sport check engine light.

My fiance & I have an 02 Ford Explorer Sport. The check engine light first came on about a month ago. We went to O'Reilly's, they hooked it up, came back it was the o2 sensors.

We replaced all of them, about 3 days passed, to which the darn "check engine light" once again came back on. Once again we returned back to O'Reillys where the computer said it was the o2 sensors yet again (knowning we already replaced them, we had them once again re-set the chip) granted that still did not keep away the "check engine light" from coming back on.

A month has passed along with that darn light is still on...I have read that the computer will tell you its the o2 sensors when in fact there could be something else throwing the "check engine light on" i have yet to find out what the cause could be....

Its also idling funny...today backing out of our driveway, it just died...

Any help with this would be more than helpful..

Thank You =)

Cash for Clunkers registration paid on time but had to request a second registration sticker. The first never showed up.

I registered on time, paid the correct fee, and everything was fine.

However, the renewal sticker did not come in the mail. I had to pay $6.30 to receive a second registration sticker.

As a result, the registration issue date is not listed as the on time payment, it is now listed at a later date, as though I had a lapse in registration renewal.

Please help! I've called the cars.gov hotline all day and have been disconnected on every single call.

Meanwhile, the dealsership can only see the Texas Depart of Transportation Vehicle Inquiry Receipts payment for registration as being late -- past the November due date. I had paid in plenty of time -- the renewal check was cashed on 10.3.08!!!

This has been my only source of transportation for nine years - title in my name, insurance and registration kept up for nine years!!!!

I could really use the $4500 toward a new car.

My car only gets 15mpg and the new car will get 25.
I used an adapter to change the wiring, have power, but no audio out. Does that radio need an external amp? Original radio worked fine, but had Cassette and no CD.

Has anyone had a problem with their Anti Lock Brake light coming on while accelerating?

On my 99 Mitsubishi Montero Sport the ABS light keeps coming on when I press the gas pedal after being stopped. The force of the air from the heater also increases as if I turned it to high the same time the Antilock light comes on. Occasionally I have a belt squeal when this happens too. This isn't a problem that is happening all the time but when it happens it it very annoying and I can't figure out what it could be that is causing the problem. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
