04 GMC Canyon - does this vehicle have history of fires igniting under dash in interior?

On 1/1/08, my brother's truck starting smoking under the hood as if it were overheating. As he pulled over to the side of the road, flames shot out on the driver side from under the dash. He had surgery today to help the 2nd & 3rd degree burns on his lower body. The truck is "totaled" but that is nothing compared to what he is experiencing. Just wondering if this truck has a know history of this. I do not see any recall info for something that would cause such a horrifc experience.

When I rev the engine while in drive only at 2700 rpm there is a rattling sound coming from the lower passenger side engine compartment. I have taken it in twice to GM and the said it was loose fittings on the exhaust manifold. This did not fix the problem. It occurs at any time either when the engine is hot are cold, but always at 2700rpm.

My 04 Canyon stalls at less than 1000 rpm, why and how do I get it fixed. If I am at highway speeds no problem, but if I have to stop, I need to keep it over that level to keep it from stalling. It does not mind going from a dead stop, just does not like to go slow. Also, it stalls when I go around corners.

This first started about 4-5 months ago. Engine would turn over fine but would not start. Sometimes it would continue to crank even when I left off the key. Sometimes it would try to start but sounded like it was dieseling.

Changed fuel filter to no avail. Went 2 months and did it again. Then did it yesterday after filling tank with gas. If I am patient and try long enough it has always started. Yesterday took maybe 15 minutes of turning off key and retrying. Finally started and as been fine since. In total there have been 4 instances.

04 Canyon 4X4 I5, 48500 mi. When I drive sometimes I feel a roughness in the steering wheel, then the AWD Brake Fault light goes on. Stays on for a while then goes off, sometimes I drive for hours with no warning light, other times it goes off a block down the road. The brakes are always working fine, some rust on rotor sound when I don't drive it for a few days, but nothing else. Do you think I just need new brake pads, rotors, or is it something else?

Hi, we are wanting to buy one of these 06 Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon crewcabs but are kind of wary due to the forum content that I have discovered just recently. We now may consider an 07 but not sure its in the budget,I was wondering if GM is covering Canadian trucks with the infamous head issues. I mentioned it to a few local dealers and I get feedback of "no knowledge that there is a problem". Anybody got anything to tell me about this?
