I have a 98 Jimmy 90,000 miles. When climbing a large/long hill, at the top the car starts this loud whining/grinding noise. (almost like an airplane coming in for a landing) Continues till I pull over and stop completely, then I hear a pop and it goes away. Does not happen all the time, but getting more pronounced lately. Help!!

1998 GMC Jimmy electrical nightmare!

I have been having an intermittent electrical problem. My gauges will just go out and dash lights. I will be doing 60 and the car will miss a little, but keep going. The gauges will jump back up and the car will do a systems check while I am doing 60. Today I started the car and no gauges and a service engine code for component slipping in transmission. Nothing is slipping, but that code is stored and keeps coming back. Today after I started and got no gauges, I shifted into gear and I got the gauges back and a service engine code(the slipping component again and I drove to work with no overdrive) Tried to have a new BCM installed that I bought online to no avail, but the car was nice and warm and dry. Drove home with the code gone, overdrive, and all my gauges. Happens most after a car wash when it goes down to zero degrees.

What did I do wrong? I can't get my GMC Jimmy to shift into drive!

I got a P1870 code on my 1996 GMC Jimmy and decided to fix it myself. I bought one of those repair kits and replaced parts of the control valve and put everything back together but now the shift linkage is off. I tried to adjust it according to my repair manual and all I can get the vehicle to shift into is P,R,N but no further. Before I take it to a shop (which you can probably tell I'd rather not do) what can I do to get the shifting back like it was? I feel like I'm missing something simple and I want to try everything before giving it to someone else.

I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy. I hit a hard bump on the interstate and my break pedal went soft and hardly had any brakes. Brake pads were replaced and all was good for 4 days until I went down a side street under construction and hit more pot holes and rough patches in the road. Once again, soft break pedal with hardly any brakes. "Reputable" dealer said, and I quote, "Left Brake hose was twisted/kinked from previous brake job. Removed calliper and untwisted hose and also noticed brake fluid with excessive carbon buildup due to possible master cylinder internal seal wear. Recommend brake flush and master cylinder due by mileage." The funny thing is that the problem started before the previous brake job. I think I was the one that was hosed. Any ideas as to why the brake pedal may have gone soft after hitting rough patches in the road?

GMC Jimmy brakes hard to press, mushy, little stopping power.

'94 GMC Jimmy - brakes would screech when coming to a stop; daughter's vehicle; drove it myself and was appalled at how bad the brakes were. Just finished changing pads and shoes, and had rotors/drums turned (no more screeching). But what has me really concerned is that you have to press VERY hard to actuate the brakes (as if the power assist is not working at all), and at 1st it feels really mushy but then the power assist seems to kick in partially, but after short order that diminishes. I'm thinking there's air in the line, but even that doesn't explain the difficulty in pressing down on the brake peddle. Chk'd the vacuum going to the power assist unit - and a vacuum is definitely present. Power Assist unit gone south, maybe?

2002 GMC Jimmy, U-joint or rear bearings? "Grinding" sound when driving, similar to front bearing wear.

I changed my front bearings, but have a similar sound now, and I suspect my rear, but it may be u-joint??
I placed vehicle in nutural and rolled backwards. So much resistance it didnt want to do this hardly. Almost like emerg. brake was engaged (It was not). My vehicle leans to the right (it sits lower) if this makes a difference. I thought this may be shocks. And here is the kicker....Nobody can crack this code. When I have a car ful of pasangers upon ecceleration from a stop it tick..tick..tick..tick.. once at spead it is fine, and the next stop it may not happen. It does do it often enough though...If car empty, and I go up a steep grade it will not do this...strange to me as I am still putting load by going up hill. I love my Jimmy, but it sure costs me alot to do so....Should have gotten married instead. Appreciate any help offered, and thanks in advance. GREAT SITE!

How to determine a possible faulty sensor on a 2000 GMC Jimmy.

I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy, 4.3, 4-whl door with about 82,000 miles. I bought the Jimmy brand new in 2000.

I have tach surging, not at idle, or accelerating / decelerating but most of the time, and not always, between where most driving speeds take place (25-60 mph). Not above or below those speeds. No tach surge under a load and only while you try to maintain a given speed, ether with your foot or in cruise. It is spontaneous on when it will surge or not. Reminds me of being a short, corrosive, broken, loose wire or part.

Have called or inquired with many dealers, small shops or friends. Replaced: fuel pump, filter, plug wires, plugs, cap, rotor and main computer. Clean throttle body.

I DON'T WANT TO HAVE ANY MORE PEOPLE SAY IT COULD BE THIS OR THAT...It's easy for shops to say that, when it's my money they are spending.

Need honest, accurate, reliable information and quit guessing. What happen to all the fancy equipment most shops have, along with their education / lic. certifications and years of experience?

This can't be the only tach surge ever on this type of vehicle or any other vehicle for that matter.

Thank you.

There are NO codes to read on any equipment so far. What other ways are there to check for irregularities that cause spontaneous tach surging, 90-95 % of the time, between 25-60 mph, NOT under a load and only while maintaining a set speed (whether in cruise or not and feathering the peddle by my foot) This issue started approximately around 50,000 miles and I now have about 82,000 miles. Transmission shifts when it should. Appears to be just fine.

My areas that I feel might be the cause:
1) faulty wire, corrosion
2) sensor
3) vacuum

Now things I checked out:
1) main computer
2) replaced / fuel filter, fuel pump, plug wires, plugs, rotor--cap
3) cleaned out throttle body

Desperately seeking experience, with past history knowledge in this tach surging, that I'm hearing is an issue in many different veh. brands and models.....

Thank you.

When I bought my Jimmy 3 years ago it had big tires on it and the ride was great. I don't know what size the old tires were, just that they looked bigger and wider. Then put on new tires the size recommended on door. The ride is rough and the gas mileage isn't as good. I am a long distance commuter and like the smooth ride. It is time for new tires again and I don't know which to buy. When I bought the Jimmy she had 135000 miles and now she has 193000 and I still enjoy driving her. lalexander

1989 GMC Jimmy S1500 4x4 low power of output of engine. excessive fuel consumption

The car starts fine and idle sounds smooth, but when you eccelerate maybe 15-20 mph it looses power and the engine revs as if it's in neutral. i adjusted the timing so i don't think timing is the cause of the problem. i also did a tune up and replace ditributor caps plugs etc. the auto transmission seems to be ok fluid level is good and clean, i'm about to remove 3 sensors map sensor (MAP /IAT /MAT) i been working on the truck for a while and i'm running out of place to look at under the hood, it will be a big help if i get a little direction, any help will be appreciated and i thank you in advance..
Julian

2000 GMC Jimmy, automatic transmission, sometimes it shifts fine, other times it won't shift out of low?

it's an automatic transmission and it doesn't matter if you shift it manually or put it in drive and wait for it to shift, it sometimes just stays in low. other times it shifts just fine, smooth as can be. Any ideas??

My 99 GMC Jimmy's running lights go and off when my turn signal is on and come back on again when it goes off.

During the day with the automatic daytime running lights on, when I turn on the turn signal, the running lights go off. When the turn signal goes off, the lights come back on. How are the daytime running lights tied to the turn signals?

The automatic headlights work fine, it switches from daytime running lights to head lights at dark and back again when it is light. All the lights work fine and the light switch works fine. When the headlights are on in automatic mode, I can use the turn signal and the lights stay on like they are supposed to. Has any one heard of this one?
