What makes some less powerful cars very fast around the Top Gear Test track?

I recently saw an episode of BBC's Top Gear where they sent a 480hp Veritas around the test track. The Veritas had the same lap time as the much heavier 420hp Audi R8 and the Caterham R500 Superlight went around the track in 1:17. This doesn't make sense, especially considering that the 1001hp Bugatti Veyron did a 1:18. How does this work.
