Is there a network of trustworthy mechanics willing to check out a used car before I buy?

I'm interested in buying a CPO 2005 corolla in L.I. NY but do not currently know any trustworthy mechanics. I was wondering if there is a network of mechanics who I can trust to take a look at the car on a lift for a small fee before I buy.

Yes there is! Go to Car Talk’s Mechanics Files site at

http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/find.html

Enter your zip code and you will get a list of mechanics in your area that other consumers have used and highly recommend. Look for ones that specialize either in the make of your car or pre purchase inspections. Call 2-3 of them and ask for a ballpark figure on the inspection and how they do it. I have personally used this site with great success to find good honest mechanics and can highly recommend it. Good luck!

You can get ratings & reviews on car dealers & repair shops in your neighborhood at Edmunds.

Find Car Dealers and Auto Repair Shops

Ask around too though - one of the recommended guys at CarTalk ripped me off last summer.

Dude in all honesty.... The car is a certified pre owned.... You wouldn't need to do it!

The "150 point" check required for the manufacturer's certification is only as good as the dealer mechanic doing the checking.

You may get a warranty from the dealer on a CPO car, but who wants to sit around a dealer's shop getting stuff fixed, even if the fix is free, that an independent mechanic may have found wrong with a car?

That reminds me, when buying a used CPO car, ask to see the checklist.
