Asked this question on the Edmunds Facebook site too. Is there anything special about Honda brand transmission fluid?

Just bought a Honda Accord, '07, and whilst browsing the owners manual in the maintenance section, it states that if one needs to add transmission fluid which is not of the Honda brand, then the fluid should be flushed asap and Honda brand transmission fluid installed. Is this wishful thinking on Honda's part or does theirs contain some sort of magic ingredient?

In Maintenance & Repair > Transmission > Automatic
In Makes & Models > Honda > Accord

Anything special,,Yes,,it says Honda on the bottle.

I see people in the Honda Accord Transmission Questions CarSpace discussion saying to only use the Honda brand, but no one really says why.

Hondas also come new from the factory with "magic" engine oil installed and they say not to change the oil early. I think it's plain old oil but they want the new oil to get "dirty" and help break in the engine.

Someone in the Odyssey discussions is using synthetic ATF.

A CarSpace member says "It a proprietary formulation made by Showa. It has been shown that use of other "compatible" fluids results in slippage and failure."
