    Actually the 1990 Cherokee 4.0 engine controller does not store trouble codes. You can connect a scanner, but it will only do certain "tests" on some engine systems but no codes. The Snap On scanner will do this as will as many others. My advice to you is check with your local auto parts store. They should be willing to connect their scanner to your Jeep and check it for no charge. Again, however, no codes will be thrown on the 1990. It wasn't until 1991 that the system stored codes.Before anything else, I would look at doing a basic ignition tune up. Change the distributor cap and rotor first. Next replace the crankshaft position sensor. These are the three most common culprits of poor running and hard starting and cost in total less than 50 bucks to replace. If you still have issues after that, come back and we can take it from there. Good luck!
