1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ manual transmission. 5th gear does not engage.

I own a 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ. I have taken exeptional care with the vehicle since buying it 10 years ago which then had only 75K miles. It currently has 150K. Everything on it is stock, except some cosemetic changes, no performance upgrades. I was driving to work one morning, travelling at about 65-70 mph when all of a sudden my rpm's went up to redline and the engine cut off. I coasted to the side of the road and tried to start the vehicle and everything seemed to be fine. I proceeded to take off and as I shifted through the gears, once I made it to 5th, I had nothing. When pu into the 5th gear position, it acts just like I am in neutral. I have not taken the Jeep to the shop yet, not knowing what exactly the problem can be. I am hoping I can make the repair myself, hopefully not needing to replace or rebuild the transmission. I drive it around regularly and everyhting works great other than the fact I cannot go over 45 mph! I have asked other jeep enthusiasts and cannot seem to find a solid answer. Please help me get my jeep back in working order!!!

i have a 95 yj also and described the problem that my transmission had on the ax5 transmission found in the yj 4cylinder. i pulled my transmission apart and it was two thing the nut on the end of the gear cluster had backed itself off and that runs around $20 and the fifth gear syncronizer was chewed up it runs around fifty five. but everything must be alligned perfect and very hard to uunderstand so when you take it apart find some kind of diagram to put it back together. so sorry to say it is in the transmission.
