    Maybe you have already got the answer to this. It is a plug that is put in when the transmission is assembled and seals off the dipstick hole. When the transmission is installed and the dipstick tube is put in place, it pushes the harmless, plastic plug back into the transmission pan. It also shows that it is the first time since assembly, the transmission pan has been removed. Believe me, I thought it was a valve of some sort that had come out and it was pretty scary when found.
