The switch inside the tailgate probably bit the dust. Access is usually via the inside of the vehicle to get at the switch. Sometimes they just get dirty from gathering gunk over the years. A good cleaning may repair it, otherwise it will need replacement.

I had the same problem on my 98 Rodeo. I just flushed out the button through the key opening with a good shot of WD40 and worked the key back and forth and it worked fine. Try that first.
