1999 Sierra extended cab pickup/5.3 V8. The service engine light always comes on. Changed gas cap, what's next?

The vehicle has a little over 65,000 miles, and along with the "service engine light" coming on, it appears that the transmission might be slipping (along with a 'clunking' sound) during a quick acceleration, and it sounds like the power steering might be going out also. I've read others having these same problems. Are there any recalls for this vehicle? What can I do in reference to the "service engine" light coming on? I've already changed the gas cap, which worked before.

You need to have the code read, either at a dealer (who will charge you for this) or at most auto parts stores. Without that information one can only speculate what the problem is.

Your transmission shouldn't be having problems at this relatively low mileage. Have you considered getting it flushed?
