Unfortunately I do not have any answer to your question, but have the identical problem with my 2002 F-150 Lariat Ext. Cab 2wd. I was driving home on a city sreet going about 35 mph and had the same thing happen. I have 56,000 miles on my truck, and never in a million years expected this. I'll be taking my truck to the transmission shop for repair and will advise what they find.

I just had this happen to me today on my 2002 F-150 114,500 miles. Two weeks before a ski trip :(

Turns out that the planetary gear came apart. The transmission shop said that this is a defect in the part. Unfortunately it's out of warranty, so I'm out of pocket. Good news is that I got it back and it runs like new (although my wallet is alot lighter now).
