2002 GMC Safari AWD. Is there a trick to removing the radiator fan shroud without getting a hernia?

2002 GMC Safari radiator fan shroud removal. I got it out after removing the air cleaner and air intake hoses plus a lot of tugging and twisting in order to replace the idler and tensioner pulleys. I can't believe it's got to be that difficult--is there something I'm missing? I'm probably going to have to take it off again to replace the alternator soon.
Thanks, Professorie
