    The thumping sound isn't encouraging, but hopefully that was just a result of the engine dying, since it doesn't thump while cranking. The problem could be many, and since parts are quite expensive, it'll probably be cheaper to let a mechaninc diagnose and fix the problem versus changing out parts on suspicion.
