2003 Sonata with original 2003 Hyundai alarm system. Can crooks access the alarm system by copying fob sent signals?

I have a 2003 Hyundai with the original theft alarm system. It has recently been claimed that the security of the system can be violated by thieves equipped with electronic copiers that detect the signals sent out by the fob transmitter, and then send out the same signals to the car while the owner is away from the car, thus unlocking it. Is this correct? If so, what can be done to outwit the thieves and prevent them from doing this?

That would require extremely costly and sophisticated equipment and an enormous amount of time, since modern key fob systems generate RANDOM ROLLING CODES that change each time you use the fob. Perhaps this rumor came about from the "old days" when simpler transmission systems were used on cars.

Even if the thief would invest in the technology, he'd have to inhabit a parking lot for days perhaps, sorting out which random signals came from which car--even if he could come up with the right code eventually.

Most car thefts are crimes of opportunity, are often crudely done, and take only a few minutes.

This is about the last thing I'd worry about if I were you.
