    Sounds like a bad idea to me, tapping = metal on metal. more is not better. I'm guessing this has a hydraulic adjuster, if so that one is bad and needs to be replaced. If it is mechanical that one needs to be adjusted. Or it could be the valve or guide was damaged when the belt broke and haven't been properly repaired.
