    The bad news is it sounds like it's time for a valve adjustment. The good news is that "a tappy valve is a happy valve" meaning there's nothing wrong, you're not huring anything driving around like this. I'm under the impression all 2.5 sohc subarus are still screw type adjustment. As your engine gets warmer, everything expands which narrows the gap between the follower and the cam/valve, which is why the noise goes away.

    One thing you'd better check often on these 2.5 engines is oil level. These engines USE OIL and if you are down a quart the engine will get noisier when cold.
