bigman5	2004 Toyota Highlander with 4 cylinder motor. Does the timing belt need replacement at 90,000 miles or not? I own a 2004 Toyota Highlander with the standard 4 cylinder engine. Does the timing belt on this engine need replacement around 90,000 miles or so. I lost the maintenance manual for the vehicle. I have been given a yes and a no answer by two different repair shops. Need to have a second opinion. Thanks. Ken

that's interesting that some shops gave you a "yes" answer when your engine doesn't even HAVE a timing belt. That's one shop I wouldn't go back to.

Your engine has a chain. No worries.

Ken,,you need to know that there is a serpentine belt on your highlanders engine.

Some people call the serpentine belt, the accessory belt.

This belt is used to operate the power steering pump, a/c compressor, water pump and alternator.

The serpentine belt should be inspected every 30,000 miles and replaced if there is damage to the belt.

Damage would consist of cracking,, splitting,,fraying,,glazing,,oil contamination.
