When the check engine light is on; it means that the computer has found a problem with the engine or its controls or sensors. Sometimes the computer will turn the fan on in such a situation. The way to proceed from here is to have the computer scanned for stored trouble codes; and to find the meaning of each code. This will give you a direction to go from there. Auto Zone stores often do computer scans for free. Some other parts stores do also. After you repair the cause of the light coming on; the code(s) will have to be erased from the computer's memory with a scan tool; or the light will not go off and the motor will not run better.
