    The problem is somewhere in the EVAP system. If you or a gas attendant continued to try and pump gas into the tank once the pump shuts off, you will damage the vent valve. Fortunately, it does not sound as if there was any permanent damage. It could also be a small leak in the gas cap. First, remove the cap and add a dab of vaseline to the rubber gasket to see if that cures the problem. If not, have an auto parts store do a OBD II scan for trouble codes. Most will do it for free. P0456 code would indicate a small leak, probably a bad gas cap. Let me know what comes up.
