2007 Ford Explorer V8 hissing sound coming from area of fuel shutoff valve inside of vehicle.

Driving down the highway a few days ago, I started hearing a hissing sound coming from the area of the fuel shutoff valve on the passenger side of the vehicle. It started sounding like a soda can hissing, but then got louder and more hollow sounding (hissing in a hollow metallic container).

A few hours later, once I restarted my vehicle; it hissed for about 5 seconds and then made a single short sound like a metal can (soda can again, but thicker) being crushed/compressed.

It hasn't made any sounds in about 2 days, so trying to replicate it for the dealer is going to be problematic. Any ideas as to what could be causing the problem?

Well the fuel shutoff valve is controlled electrically so that's not it. Hissing is, of course, usually a loose vacuum line somewhere. Also the blend doors for heat and AC are electric, so that's not it. I guess you're going to have to remove the access panel under the dash and try to locate the noise. It may have to get worse, or something might have to malfunction to locate this.

Are you sure it couldn't have been loose weatherstripping in the door or windshield? You know, like wind noise? How about tire noise on that side?

Although the Explorer is probably the worst with regard to wind/tire noise (say it ain't so!), this is definitely not a weatherstripping/wind noise/tire noise issue - if it were, I'd be able to recreate it pretty easily. However, I can believe it's related to some sort of vacuum system, but since the hissing is intermittent, hunting it down is going to be problematic. It's definitely coming from inside the vehicle, and it could possibly be coming from something under the dash. My stupid girl question - what non-electronic vacuum system is located/connected in that area?

Thanks in advance!
