95 ford escort. When cold, the tranny sometimes disengage and engine revs. high. Any idea what is causing this?

Just started last week. Car has just over 60,000 miles. I had the tranny oil changed and put in some transmission oil treatment. It is still happening - however, when operating, the change of gears is a lot smoother. When it happens, it does not matter what gear it is on, it's all the same.

When I stop and put the car in park, then reverse and back-up a bit, back in park and then in gear, it usually engages and stays there.

Any suggestions?

Sounds to me like a loss of hydraulic pressure internally. You should check the fluid level again, but generally if a transmission acts up when cold, it means the seals are no longer pliable and hydraulic pressure "bleeds out". The additives swell the seals up somewhat but generally additives are not good for a tranmission unless they are of a very special type that repair shops use.
