    The alternator is likely under charging, and that is why the old battery went dead. The new battery is capable of subsidizing the alternator, for a short while. This will eventually kill the new battery as well. Testing an alternator properly, requires knowledge and tooling that are generally not going to be found in a parts store. The alternator needs to be tested, on the vehicle, by a qualified shop. The light indicates a discharge condition. Odds are it is putting out less than the specified amperage and slowly draining the battery.
