tommy_speed	99 2.5 Subaru Outback camshaft broke. Removed passenger time belt cover and two drive wheels broke. Rebuild or buy used one? My 1999 30th Anniversary Edition Outback made a bad noise and stopped. I opened the passenger side timing belt cover and found that the upper and lower pulleys were broken. Part of the pulleys are attached, so I checked to see if the cam shaft pulley showed resistance, but it turns freely. I have never seen anything like this ever. My car has 120k miles! I have never heard or seen anything like this before from a Subaru. I just had the belts changed before all this happened, thus I feel it was related to this work, possibly. Any ideas from my Brothers and Sisters in Subs? My question is rebuild or buy a used replacement? Since the camshaft is broken on the passenger side, is it easy to rebuild in the car and worth it or should I replace the engine? I hate to put a good Sub to rest. Help!

If this were my car, I wold look around for a good used engine. It sounds like you have the skills to install it.

Things happen. Our son's 2009 Impreze blew it's engine (literally) at 30,000 miles. The Service Manager at Subaru said " We've seen this before"
