Sometimes the pump just gets dry and needs to be primed before enough fuel can get to the engine.

Try turning the key to the on position and leaving it there for a few minutes before starting it. If you turn off the interior vent fan then you may be able to hear it buzzing.

I've had a fuel pump burn out from running while there wasn't any fuel. So its also possible that your fuel pump has broken.

If you do run out of gas make sure you put a full tank of gas in afterwords. this should prime the pump. if that doesnt work you may have damaged the fuel pump trying to restart it.
