I like both as long as they are the diesel versions. The Q7 TDI has a 225hp 3.0L V6 turbodiesel and the X5 xDrive35d has a 265hp 3.0 I-6 twin-turbo diesel, but the Audi's 8 speed auto means that performance is closer than you might expect. A friend of mine loves his Q7 TDI, he gets 27mpg on the highway and he drives it pretty fast. The X5 is smaller, more fuel-efficient, and slightly faster, but it's less comfortable and has a useless 3rd row seat. I would reccommend that you also look at the VW Touareg TDI, I liked it so much that I bought one. I get about 35mpg on the highway (I got 40 mpg recently) and over 20 mpg in the city. It is just as fast as the BMW X5 35d (0-60 in 6.9 seconds according to Car and Driver), it gets much better fuel economy, has an 8 speed auto, has just as much space as the X5, a little less space than the Q7, tows 7700lbs, is very comfortable and luxurious, and it costs at least $10,000 less than the Q7 and X5. The Touareg is based on the next generation Q7, because it was redesigned last year. I think it is a waste of time to look at the gas versions of these SUVs, because their slightly better or in some cases worse (Touareg VR6) performance is completely useless because 5000lb+ SUV are never performance cars. It is much more satisfying to have a powerful, capable, roomy, and extremely luxurious SUV that gets 4 cylinder sedan fuel economy.
