Are all cars covered by the CAFE standards or just trucks?

Why is it that a HUMMER can have such poor gas mileage? It must be exempt or something?

New FE standards are being released soon. Just found additional information as well. Manufacturer's of these 'gas guzzlers' have to pay a hefty charge which they in turn pass onto the consumer.

My comment on the CL63 was wrong actually. The gas guzzler tax on that vehicle was $2,800!! At any rate, they don't "get" away with it. They have to pay fines.

Certain breaks apply to manufacturers if they have vehicles in their lineup that get 35mpg+. You'll see a number of manufacturer's getting on board.

Hope that helped!

I'm not 100% on this, but I believe people pay a "Gas Guzzler" tax on when buying vehicles like this. The last time I saw one of these taxes, it was on a CL63 and the charge was $1,700!!

Hope that helps.

I believe this is how it works correct me if I am wrong.

The CAFE standards are on the car company as a whole. Ie the Hummer badge is under GM ownership as well as a number of others including saturn that are quite a bit more economical so it works out that as a whole GM will meet CAFE standards.
