Brake switch maybe?

my truck doesen't get out of park unless,i turn the key forward put it in neutral then it turns on and i can put it in gear. (auto tran.) i removed the brake switch on the brake petal and tried shifting out of gear and it works goes in and out of park with no problems, of course no brake lights. put the switch back on and the same problem continues. my question, what exactly is that switch called when i explain it to auto supply stores i get different answers as well as prices. thanks for your help
