The 1.6 liter SOHC engine used in the 2000 Esteem is listed as an "interference engine." That means the valves can strike the pistons if the timing belt breaks. If the belt broke and the motor has subsequently been turned over; it is very likely that some contact did take place. If you are fortunate; the damage might be limited to some bent valves. But it also could have damaged the pistons. So it will be necessary to remove the cylinder head and inspect the pistons and valves in order to get a sense of the extent of the damage which was done.
