Can the Nissan Altima be fitted with a trailor hitch and safely tow a small boat & trailor, under 1000 lbs?

That shouldn't be a problem, especially if you have the V6, but 1000 lbs is not unreasonable with the I4. The biggest concern would be overheating your transmission, so if you're going a great distance or over hilly areas you might consider an aftermarket transmission cooler (your car has one built into the radiator, this would be in addition to that). If you're just using this locally you may not need that, but you'll still want to change your automatic transmission fluid more frequently. You can pick up a hitch at etrailer.com to install yourself, or have one put in at a u-haul.

Yes, you shouldn't have any problem with that. Just check with Uhaul or another nearby company that installs tow hitches. They can do it for a reasonable fee.
