Car stuck in neutral.

i just bought a car, and it worked fine. but later on it got stuck in reverse. whenever i go into any other gear (except park) it just acts like it is in neutral. What is wrong?

In Vehicle Type > Hatchback
In Maintenance & Repair > Transmission > Shifting

Edit Answer (for another 11 minutes)

I would start by checking the linkage,making sure everything is connected and tight, if it is then it could be a tranny problem

I would start by checking the linkage,making sure everything is connected and tight, if it is then it could be a tranny problem, maybe someone else could help if you give year ,make ,and model
