    Check in the underhood relay box ..
    Fuse #1..a 60 amp fuse for the electronic power steering control module...
    Maybe he blew this fuse...

    If not,then as suggested,take it in for service....

    The HHR has electric assist steering, instead of a mechanical pump. He might have shorted the electric steering assist by bumping the relay box.

    I'd advise to go to a mechanica so they can do a thorough check. Might not be covered by warranty though.

    It is likely he used to wrong post to attach cable to and blew the steering fuse. Its an easy mistake to make and and has happened before. The correct cable attachment places are in the manual.
