A Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic is your best bet. The Corolla gets better gas mileage but is not as much fun to drive. For 5 grand you may be able to find a 2001 or 2002 model with less than 60-70K miles. Just make sure you get a Carfax report and have a mechanic look it over before you finalize the deal! Good luck!

If AWD would be useful to you, my favorite to suggest is the 2001 Subaru Impreza sedan (not the RS) and wagon with the 2.2 liter only (stressing that limitation). The manual 5 speed has a hill-holder clutch feature that you might like if you have to stop on hills. It does not get "awesome" gas mileage, but should do as well as I do in my more powerful Outback which gets me 28-29 mpg avg also driving 500 miles per week.

The Civic & Corolla will get better fuel economy and FWD is cheaper to maintain on average, but I'd rather be in a Subaru going through "sharp curves".
