Compact 2 and 4 door cars with lower cost to insure?

What compact cars tend to cost less to insure? 16 year old daughter's first car, she likes Ford Focus, Chevy Cavalier, Dodge Neon, Pontiac Sunfire, Pontiac Vibe, Honda Civic. We are looking for cheaper cars ($3000 to $4000), will not likely place collision insurance on it, liability and comprehensive only.

you should check with your insurance agent - but I'm pretty sure that if you go with liability only, there will be little difference between the cars on your list. I did the same thing you are considering 5 years ago for my son's car - a 94 Subaru legacy that has been great & he still drives it all over the East Coast in his senior year in college. My daughter got my 02 Chevy Prizm - a Corolla twin this past March and that has also worked out well.

If she will be driving in any snow at all, or even heavy rains, you may want to look for one of my favorites - a 99 to 00 Subaru Impreza L (not the RS !) sedan or coupe with the famous subaru 2.2 4 cyl. engine. The engine with a 4 speed auto is very durable. Its possible the sedan may be less expensive to insure - check with your agent.

Sorry, but the Cavalier, Sunfire and Neon are junk and good luck finding an unmolested Civic that is worth driving in your price range. A clean Vibe and Focus would be worth a look, but the Subaru Impreza would be my first choice, and I know the insurance on subarus is cheap.
