Dealer prep charges?

I asked before about a "port charge." I have now been told it is a dealer prep charge of $195 which is added to the invoice price on every car Audi sells. Does anyone know why this is not added tot he invoice price shown on Edmunds or other similar sites?

Sounds like one of those bogus charges that manufacturers use to pad the invoice. Just offer an "out the door" price that includes all fees and let the dealer decide where those charges end up.

In most cases they differ from region to region, and Edmunds as well as other sites sometimes out listing those and advertising, and destination charges.

Just tell them that you won't pay extra for a car with which they have tampered and to sell you one that they have not prepped. I've found that this line sets a nice antagonistic tone if you've had a bad day. Expensive car wash.

Part of the prep charge is a safety check where they inspect the vehicle for any mistakes the assembly line workers may have overlooked. Removal of cardboard and paper used to protect the car during shipping, fluid levels, broken or damaged areas. etc. etc. No dealer will sell you a car without looking it over. I don't know where morin2 gets his information.

I got my information from personal experience buying many new cars in 35+ years and never paying a port charge or a dealer prep charge. Many dealers charge neither. But Hey - what do I know - I don't even run carfaxes for people on edmunds.

Instead of spinning your wheels negotiating all these stupid little fees that the dealer is trying to stick you with, tell your salesperson you want to know what your "out the door" price is going to be, including taxes, title and everything else.

Meanwhile, figure out the TMV, taxes and title fees yourself and work toward that number or less.

That way you only have to haggle over one number, not several of them.

This dealer sounds difficult anyway - maybe you should take a breather and get some quotes using the Dealer Quote link on the main Edmunds.com page. You may get a better deal in the next county over. And there's no telling what other fees this dealer is going to try to pull on you when you get to the F&I office (aka the Rip Off Room) for signing the papers.
