Defogger takes forever to work, plus rear defogger hardly works at all.

For about a week now, my defogger will not defog unless I crank the fan up to the highest level and keep the interior super hot. Let me back up and say that when I first turn it on, it takes forever to clear the fog and then unless I keep the fan and heat on high, the windshield will fog right back up again. Also the rear defogger doesn't work as well as it used to.
What is going on, and is it worth getting fixed? My car is 13 years old and runs great, but I've already sunk enough money into it this year and am loathe to put more into it for something that might cost more than the car is worth.

Well, a bit hard to answer except in general terms since you don't identify your car year, make and model, but here goes. First thing to check is your cabin air filter if you have one. It may be clogged. Next, check the blender doors in the heater assembly under the passenger side dash. These can get hung up and prevent air to get at different ducts like your defogger. The rear defogger is totally different and works on electrical resistance through the glass wires and does not use the hot air. There isn't much to do there. Good luck!

My car:
1995 Olds Cutlass Cierra w/ ~106, 000 miles on it. I didn't think that the make/model of my car would be that big of a deal. Aren't all defoggers created equal? (asked the dim-witted woman whose knowledge of cars could probably be written on a penny.

How does the air conditioning work? The aircon system is used when defrosting as it takes the moisture out of the air. The only other thing that comes to mind is a heater core issue (leak) releasing moisture and fogging up the windshield.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply anything about your knowledge. It is just that sometimes the particular car may have some unique features that affects the answer. I wanted to add that you may have an obstruction in one of the ducts. This time of year is when most people first turn on the heat after 6 months of non-use. So make sure that when they check the blend doors they also look for debris like leaves and such in the duct itself. Good luck!

Well it turns out that my car needs a new heater core; once I get that replaced, my car should be as good as new. Well as good as a 13 year old car can be. ;)
Canddmeyer was right--go to the head of the class!

Remember everybody: if it has a roof or a rear view, it's gonna cost you money.
