The automatic is not as fast, gets slightly worse gas mileage, requires more expensive maintenance in the long run (120k miles), costs a bit more up front and is far easier to drive in traffic, with people, or while drinking coffee.

Are you asking about performance? ...... Like how fast is the automatic compared to the manual?

If you're getting a Protege it has to be a manual, the Protege is a fun car to drive, but a four speed automatic can easily ruin the fun. I have a 2001 Honda Civic LX, which is a good handling car that should be fun, but isn't because it has a useless 4 speed auto. The automatic is slow and doesn't allow the car's engine to rev like it should. The Protege is much more fun the the Civic and has a more revvy engine, but you need a manual to make the most of that.
