Extended Warranty for 2005 Ford Explorer worth it?

The 3 year Factory Warranty ran out last week on my 2005 Explorer. I only have 12,000 miles on it An Extended Warranty through Ford ESP would cost me $2200. I think I have read all the fine print, but does anyone have any experience with these Extended Warranties?

Like any other insurance warranties are generally a bad deal. It is very unlikely the car would require that much in repairs over the life of the warranty. Of course if you simply can't afford an expensive repair it might be worth it to you for the peace of mind.

If your transmission goes, that's a $ 3,400 repair.

Explorer 6 cyl transmissions seem to have a higher failure rate than their competitors, although usually it is more likely to be one with 70,000 or higher miles that fails.

If you are only going to put 3,000 or 4,000 miles per year, it may not be worthwhile. If you are going to drive 12,000 or more miles per year now, then give it serious thought.

Remember that all required maintenance must be performed on the vehicle to keep the extended warranty operative.

I had an extended warranty on one Explorer that I didn't ever use and another on a different Explorer where the transmission and some other stuff went bad. The extended warranties weren't from Ford though.

Also, you will likely need to put on 1,000 miles and at least 30 days in case you have something that is defective before the extended warranty will kick in.

With your kind of mileage I wouldn't bother with it. Otherwise under normal circumstances like driving 12-20k miles per year I would buy one, especially on an Explorer.
