    i would say its the front drive shafts driving the front wheels, they are basically like a cv joints. it will also clunk when you hit a bump usually.

    Dont go out and buy those front axles. I own a garage in MD. If you read on the net you will find the avalon has this common problem. The steering shaft needs lubed. Toyota part number is 04007-76133. Cost is around $20.00. Comes with instructions. If you know anything about cars takes about an hour. If not find someone that can do it for you. Tony
