It could be the wheel bearing going out but normally you would hear it when you are just driving not only turning. if it is a thumping noise more when you turn to one side more then the other way its prolly going to be a ball joint.
What make/model/year/miles vehicle?If the play is present on the left, but not the right, then a bearing could be bad. The other thing I would check are the CV joints in the driver's side front axle.Get it checked before more damage is done.
