    Assuming you have manual transmission: try adjusting the shifting linkage on top of the transmission, easily accessible in engine compartment. Typically if adjustment is off you will have trouble finding individual gears.

    If you're fairly mechanically inclined it is simple, and you can find instructions on youtube; or have mechanic check it out.
    If transmission is bad it will be expensive to replace.
