I believe that if the adjuster decides that it was another car that hit yours, then it will be a collision claim; if he determines something else hit the car, like a falling object, a rolling rock, a deer, whatever, then it will be a comprehensive claim.

New York may have some state-specific coverage issues, but I don't think they have much to do with whether "hit when parked" is covered by comprhensive. Comp usually covers most anything that can happen to the car (physical damage) EXCEPT being struck by or striking another vehicle. Examples are fire, theft, vandalism, animal damage, etc. Buying collision coverage is designed to cover what you're looking for, after a deductible. But if you didn't get collision, your consolation is just knowing the money you saved not paying for the coverage all along might help pay for the damage.

You should be asking the agent this question. But I don't think comp will cover it. Sorry.

It is still technically a collision (look at the definition) and probably won't be covered.

If the party that hit your vehicle during the night didn't leave a note, then it sounds like absolute 100% vandalism and hit and run to me.

If you have uninsured coverage it might cover, but I've known most insurance companies to make uninsured coverage almost useless and worthless as they leave the burden of PROOF beyond any doubt to you , the customer, that the person causing the damage was indeed uninsured. They will ASSUME they were insured unless you can prove otherwise.

Yet another reason I hate insurance companies.

I would go for the vandalism argument, as there is no proof it wasn't vandalism.
