How can I check or remove the headlight switch on a 98 Pontiac Sunfire?

My headlights don't light up at all, I replaced the bulbs, the thing is when I hold the high beam switch on they light up. When I release the switch they go out, but the drl, day time running lights stay on till I hit the high beam switch, then they go out also. Thanks

You may have a bad multi-function headlight switch, but before we conclude that which is an expensive repair lets try 2 things. First, replace the headlight relay in the fuse box. It is a $10 item and just pulls out and plugs in. If that doesn't work, find the connector to the headlight switch at the base of the steering column. Disconnect it and spray with an electrical contact cleaner till very clean and add a dab of dielectric grease to the connector and reconnect it. Many times this will cure the problem. If that fails come on back here and we can try and trace the problem. Good luck and let me know how it works out!
