How can I go about getting my car on the exception list for the "Cash for Clunkers" program?

I have a relatively rare 1992 model car for which used parts are difficult to find and new replacement parts are prohibitively expensive. If they start crushing the perfectly good ones, used parts will become even more scarce and expensive. Are there guidelines for which cars are "exempt" from the program? Whom would I contact about this? I don't want to see perfectly good cars going to the crusher when we need the parts!

There is no list to exempt certain vehicles from being crushed. But...

The cash for clunkers law allows traded-in cars to be dismantled and some parts to be sold. There's even a loophole written in to spare powertrain parts from the shredder. Hopefully the salvage yards that receive any cars like yours will recognize the rarity of the vehicle and dismantle them for parts rather than crushing the vehicle.

Rather than trying to get " your " car on an exemption list,,if such a list even exists,,you could always buy some used cars that are the same model as " your " car,,strip them down, then you would have a supply of parts at your disposal.

That's something that's beyond your control. You cannot dictate to other owners what they can or can't do with their cars even if they're super rare.

If the vehicle is indeed valuable and rare as you say it is, then the values would be more than the cash for clunkers voucher, and chances are their owners wouldn't be trading them in under that program.

But like someone else said, if you think that they'll become scarce and parts will go up in value, then you should invest your money and buy few examples to keep for parts for you or to resell.

By the way, what kind of car is it that you have?
